All files are turned into immutable Binary Large Object (BLOB) files, which contains some chunk of data (one or more files). Synology HyperBackup is a good solution, if not cranky at times. If the only way I could recover my data was to purchase another Synology unit, then that's what I'd do I'm not too fussed about vendor lock in.I'm okay with waiting a couple of weeks to restore data at a slower pace/higher price
